Staff Reviews

This is one of the few instances in my adult life when I’ve not only been peer pressured, but also that the peer pressure actually paid off. Before Christmas, two of my coworkers started gently pushing me to read this series, and then slowly everyone else began to pile on – universally, this series is loved by the Longfellow Books staff. Many text chains have been exchanged; character affiliations have been assigned; weeping and teeth-gnashing has commenced. I read the first two and immediately gifted them to my mom for Christmas and, upon finishing the third (the only thing I asked my brother to get me for Christmas), turned around and gave it to her so she could have her turn.

The Thursday Murder Club takes place at a retirement home in the English countryside called Coopers Chase, where four pensioners – Joyce, Elizabeth, Ron, and Ibrahim – have formed a club to investigate cold cases (so named because Thursdays is when they can reserve the Jigsaw Room for a two-hour slot between Art History and Conversational French). This is all in good fun, bothering no one, until suddenly a local developer is found dead with a suspicious photo beside him. Without warning, the Club has found itself embroiled in a real case with real stakes, which grow higher every day.

When I have to describe this book (which I do, often – I recommend it to anyone looking for a vacation read) I mostly just say it’s delightful. There’s no other word I feel to be sufficient – the characters are so well-realized and heartfelt that you just want to sit in on one of their meetings. The writing is also laugh-out-loud funny; if you’re familiar with British panel TV at all, you’re likely to recognize Richard Osman, giant and bespectacled as he is. He brings his signature dry British humor to the four pensioners and their escapades (shenanigans is also a word I’d use here) and the resultant product is a book unlike any I’ve ever read – sincere, heartfelt, riotous, and smelling gently of English breakfast tea.
