This was probably my first favorite book, around the time my brain snapped into consciousness and I stopped just thinking about, like, One Direction and Supernatural and redirected my attention to these two writers tag-teaming a book about the biblical apocalypse. I feel like I say this in almost every recommend I write, but: there is truly no way to describe this book. The soul of it is two old friends having fun writing a story together – the fact that the story happens to be a brilliant cult classic in the making is completely incidental.

Here’s my elevator pitch: an angel and a demon have found themselves in cahoots since the Beginning, and have over the years become friends – neither particularly invested in the heavenly mission or in damning souls, and as a result they sort of halfheartedly thwart each other’s “attempts” to procure souls for either side, instead preferring to indulge in earthly delights (gravlax with dill, bourbon) in the used bookshop the angel owns. They could happily spend an eternity like this, and are fully planning to (they’re married in my heart) until suddenly the Divine Plan is set into motion – the Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Great Beast that is called Dragon, Prince of This World, Father of Lies, Spawn of Satan, and Lord of Darkness (also known as the Antichrist, also known as Adam) is delivered unto Earth, and so the Apocalypse begins to loom. So these two friends, who have decided they like the world very much, actually, take it upon themselves to stop the Apocalypse, which is rather difficult when someone has somehow misplaced Adam the Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Great Beast that is called Dragon, Prince of This World, Father of Lies, Spawn of Satan, and Lord of Darkness. The whole thing is a riotous conglomeration of inside jokes, snarky footnotes, biblical asides, and delightful digressions. Would recommend to anyone that enjoys a good hearty chuckle.

About the Author

Neil Gaiman is the celebrated author of books, graphic novels, short stories, films, and television for readers of all ages. Some of his most notable titles include the highly lauded #1 New York Times bestseller Norse Mythology; the groundbreaking and award-winning Sandman comic series; The Graveyard Book (the first book ever to win both the Newbery and Carnegie Medals); American Gods, winner of many awards and recently adapted into the Emmy-nominated Starz TV series (the second season slated to air in 2019); The Ocean at the End of the Lane, which was the UK’s National Book Award 2013 Book of the Year. Good Omens, which he wrote with Terry Pratchett a very long time ago (but not quite as long ago as Don’t Panic) and for which Gaiman wrote the screenplay, will air on Amazon and the BBC in 2019.
